Shiann Famero Commits to Ottawa University
On Wednesday, January 8, Cache wrestler Shiann Famero signed to play at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.
She chose the university because of the campus and coaches, who also kept up with her high school career.
“I've seen the way they interact with their girls and, you know, what they keep up with,” Famero said. “They keep up with their girls, and they constantly give them compliments, and I think that's the environment I need to be in.”
She will be focusing on studies the first year, but by sophomore year, she’ll hit the mats.
Famero wants to study exercise science with a focus on nutrition.
Her passion for health began freshman year.
“Back when I was a freshman…I did weigh 190, 195. So, being, growing up, being as short as I am, being chubby, it kind of did bring on bullying,” Famero said. “And so, I decided that I didn't want to live my life like that anymore, and I started getting in shape. But little did I know, it's not just working out and, you know, whatever. You also have to eat right. You also have to actually think about the things you take in and intake into your body. So, I decided that I wanted to start doing nutrition. And then, the way I feel after I start eating good things…it makes me feel, I don't know, great. Like, I feel like I can do a whole bunch of things throughout the day.”
But her wrestling career started in elementary and began again in high school.
“But wrestling itself is actually really fun. Like, the first time I got my hand raised, it felt like everything in the world, honestly. Like, I felt like, ‘Dang, my hard work paid off,’ you know. Like, the thing I do on the mat is finally paying off,” Famero said. “And having everyone come up to you saying, ‘Oh, you know, good job.’ Like, ‘That was a good match.’ And then constantly getting better and constantly learning more new techniques and dominating girls is just; it's the best feeling in the world to me. So, it's why I keep wrestling.”
Famero said it’s bittersweet to leave Cache High School and appreciated her coaches’ hard work.
