Senior Spotlight: Margaret Poahway
Margaret Poahway runs 2 miles in cross country and the 1 and 2 miles for Track and Field for Sequoyah High School.
She’s also in the HOPE club.
“It's honoring our people's existence so it's like a Native American club, and I'm secretary for this club, and we host the end of the year powwow, graduation powwow, and we hold stomp dances,” Poahway said.
Freshman year she went to Cache High School and made it to state individually with two other teammates.
“At Sequoia, my new school, I've got a track and field award, most improved for two years now,” Poahway said.
She said it felt good to receive the award.
“I got injured one time, so I wasn't very good at the beginning, but once I started running again…that's why I got the award for it,” Poahway said.
And the main reason she got into running...
“I want to say something great, but my uncle he told me to ‘Quit laying around the house,’ and I had to do a sport, but later I found out I had a heart murmur and I wasn't able to play basketball or softball or anything like that,” Poahway said. “And so, they cleared me for running though, so I started running track in seventh grade and started cross country in eighth grade, and now I'm still doing it.”
She said she’s going to miss her teammates and friends when she graduates.
“I live three hours away from my school, and I don't get to see my friends like I never see any friends in the summer and miss my coaches, some of my teachers and just everyone, everything about it,” Poahway said.
She said she plans to attend college for sports and exercise science and possibly become an athletic trainer.
“I if I'm able to run for college, I would love to run at that level,” Poahway said.
She said she loves to cook and would like to also go to culinary school. She also enjoys cosmetology.
“I always love braiding hair, and I love curling my hair. I love doing anything with my hair and not really lashes or nails or anything like that, but I just always liked watching that stuff and always wanted to do it,” Poahway said.
She said she used to dance in powwows when she was little up to the age of six.
“I was never a princess or anything, but my sister was a Little Pony princess, and I was always around her,” Poahway said. “I went to every powwow I was running around rugged, you know, and I still want to dance to this day. I just don't really have time for that.”
One of her hobbies is crocheting.
“I started crocheting when I was nine, and I still make hats to this day, and I love baking and running, and I don't like knitting,” Poahway said. “But I tried it. I know how to do it, so I like to sew, too. When I used to play with my Barbies when I was little, I’d always make them clothes and crochet them little bags and hats.”
