New Royalty Crowned at Annual Walters Service Club Powwow

Walters Service Club held its annual powwow on Thursday, July 18, at the Walters Community Building in Walters, Oklahoma.

According to Walters Service Club President Mari Lavatai, the powwow featured a crowning of new royalty, a veteran honoring and beginning the Walters Homecoming events.

Newly crowned royalty for Walters Service Club were Jr. Princess Tiana McClung and Little Miss Nahmi Poafpybitty.

“We're here to just get together within the community and enjoy ourselves and that's something I look forward to every year,” Lavatai said.

Her mother would later pass the responsibility of being a part of the organization to her, but Lavatai’s grandmother was an original member.

“Something that she wanted to keep the Walters Service Club continue and so along with my sister Eva Asenap, my daughter Cecily Brigoli is our secretary, Eva Asenap is our treasurer and Ruth Factor is our vice president,” Lavatai said. “So, that's something that we want to continue to carry on as long as we can, and then hopefully my daughters will step in and carry on the Walters Service Club.”

They honored Walters Service Club member Larry McCurtain at the powwow.

“It's something that I've wanted to do to always remember to honor a veteran here at the powwow,” she said.“It's not just not necessarily about contests, something that I wanted to honor our veterans here. A lot of our veterans organizations are here at our powwow, and I'm very proud to see that a lot of people have showed up for our powwow today.”

Royalty in attendance included Comanche Nation Princess Bluesky Tosee, Comanche Nation Jr. Princess Arlene Schonchin, Walters Service Club Princess Kyleigh Davidson and Marine Corps Princess Kasey Atauvich.
