May the Force be With You, Mr. MHS

Students nominated for Mr. MHS got to show off their Jedi skills and talents on Friday, January 27, at MacArthur High School.

Caden Tahbonemah was one of those nominees. He said it was nice to get to know new people.

“Kind of created a close relationship over the few practices that we had and we all had fun together,” he said.

He said his performance idea came from his mom.

“I knew I was going to do something with the music that I walked into with and I didn’t know what to do or what transition to use and my mom kind of helped me with that,” he said.

Tobademah said it felt really good to be nominated.

“When they send it out to the kids and they have a full list of every single boy in the 12th grade and at first, I didn’t feel like there was a lot of kids and I saw the list and was like ‘oh, oh wow like that’s a lot,’” he said. “So, it was an honor just to be one of the eight we had.”

It was important to him because he got to work on social skills.

“Getting in front of everybody, it was hard a first,” he said. “It was tough to breathe and we had two kids actually that one of them is a dancer and the other one is…an actor in plays and stuff with the drama team. I would just ask for advice like you know in through your nose out the mouth, try to relax and it helped me. By the second time, I was on stage…I was all right. My goal when I got out there was just to have fun and build my confidence in front of hundreds of people and I think I did just that.”

Tohbademah’s costume design came from the stage setup and the event's theme.

“I didn’t like the idea, like the light, shining on me,” he said. “And so, I wanted to have a mask and I knew like the music that we walked out to was in the movies is what Darth Vader and his stormtroopers walk out with…it’s kind of iconic. So, I gave my buddies the stormtrooper mask and I had Darth Vader.”

He said there were performances unrelated to the theme.

“I like to be something that’s different but at the same time kind of tied into the theme so I tried to use my costume,” he said.

Tohbademah said not to be afraid to do something new.

“I was probably was real friends with half the people up there and the other half it was just good to be around,” he said. “I learned some things from each of them, just don’t be afraid to try something new.”

The winner of the event was Matthew Agular.
