Lawton High School Lady Wolverine Signs for College Volleyball
Lawton High School Lady Wolverine and volleyball player Gabrielle Wright signed to play for Jarvis Christian University in Wood County, Texas.
She will play libero and defensive specialist (DS).
“Their coach made it very clear that she could help me with my academics and with my volleyball career, as being a DS requires a lot of conditioning and hard work and discipline,” Wright said.
She is looking forward to several aspects of the college, including the positive environment, community and family bond.
“I really want a good school who can help me keep my love for my sport and not lose it,” Wright said. “Because a lot of times athletes tend to lose the love for this sport when they go on into college and so and also further and better my skills as well.”
She will study communication and mass communication.
“I feel like I'm a very likable person, and I have a very lively character,” Wright said. “So, just being in front of the camera and talking to people is no issue for me. It's something I'm very good at. I love to talk, so. And I also wanted to be a sports narrator for volleyball, you know, narrate, you know, what's going on, ‘Oh, she just got an ace’ type.”
She said it was stressful signing because of the unknown.
“And it's a new chapter for me. I've been in school, and I've been in this small community my whole entire life,” Wright said. “So, it's a big change, but I'm also very excited because I get to see new things, new environment and see what I can learn and how I can adapt. So, I can't wait.”
She said it will be hard to leave her furry family behind.
“It's kind of tough because I have two sons, which are my dogs (Achilles and Meech). I love them, and I won't be able to take them because I'll be traveling a lot,” Wright said. “And so, I think I'll mostly miss them more than anyone.”
She will begin her training in July or August.
