An Elders Council Christmas
On Monday, December 9, Comanche Nation Elders Council held a Christmas event at Watchetaker Hall.
The event featured Travis Komahcheet on flute, a fashion show and vendors, as well as a meal served by Lil Darlin’s.
Comanche Nation Princess Bluesky Tosee and Jr. Princess Arlene Schonchin signed the Lord’s Prayer while Sarah Pohawpatchoko sang.
Elder Council Chairman Rosalind Asetamy said much work goes into the Elders Council and its events.
“We started talking about this probably in July and just would throw in ideas every now and then, and then we finally really started trying to pull it together,” she said. “Probably in October, September, October, we started actually contacting people.”
Asetamy said her mother participated in the meetings every month; Asetamy said the event brings the elder community together.
“We know that there are shut-ins,” she said. “We know that there are elders that don't have a lot of family involvement, so we try to make each monthly meeting special, and that's our goal. We want them to enjoy.”
Asetamy said it’s a special time for elders.
“My favorite part is just seeing the elders enjoy the meetings,” she said. “I don't know how things were in the past because, like I said, I couldn't ever attend, but I just feel like it's a really good opportunity to show the elders that we care.”
Asetamy said it’s important for elders to participate more and share their family history.
Over 200 people participated in the event.
