Elder's Council Celebrates Christmas
On Monday, December 4, the Comanche Nation Elder’s Council, comprised of Comanches who are 62 and older, held a Christmas Celebration at Watchetaker Hall.
Chairman of the Elder’s Council Rosalind Asetamy said the meal brings elders together.
“That's the Indian way, is to eat together, break bread together,” she said. “And, you know, we just wanted to have this so that everyone could be together today in celebration of Christmas.”
Asetamy said the council wanted to make a point of celebrating the meaning of Christmas. They also honored the eldest and youngest members of the Elder’s Council.
“And that was Pauline Kowena. She's 99, and I believe next month, it's either January or February, she's going to be 100 years old. So, we wanted to recognize her, and we recognized the newbies. There were two newbies to the elder group,” she said.
Those who attended the event were given door prizes, which was Asetamy’s favorite part.
She said it’s always good for elders to visit each other; without events, they may stay home.
“Because we don't know who's going to be here tomorrow, you know. And I mean, it's that way for the younger people as well, but mostly for the elders; it's always good to be together,” Asetamy said. “And my mother is 94. She wasn't able to be here today because Friday's event, Saturday's general council, all of that was taking a toll. So, she couldn't make it today. And I know there are other elders in that same situation.”
She said she was pleased with everyone who helped them.
“This morning, bam, bam, bam, and everything came together beautifully,” Asetamy said. “And then all the elders showing up and signing in, and it was just, I'm just amazed. I'm really pleased.”
Comanche Nation Chairman Mark Woommavovah also raffled off various items and helped serve the elders with Comanche Nation Jr. Princess Vivien Parker.
Upcoming Elder’s Council meetings will be on the first Monday of every month at Watchetaker Hall. Asetamy said the schedule would change if there were a holiday or another event.
