Comanche Nation Princess Michelle Nevaquaya Hosts Honor Powwow
Comanche Nation Princess Michelle Nevaquaya held her honor powwow on March 18 at the Comanche County Fairgrounds Expo Center.
The powwow began with brush dancing, which she said cleansed the arena.
Nevaquaya said she felt good at the powwow and was able to bring many families together.
“My sister and her boyfriend, they just came in from North Carolina, so I'm glad they're here with me today,” she said. “I know a bunch of other families came in from a long distance, so I'm glad I get to bring everybody together and we get to have a good time of singing and dancing.”
Nevaquaya said it’s important to bring families together.
“It's a way to have a good time, get to catch up with everyone, and then you get to dance with them,” she said.
Nevaquaya said she was thankful to have her family at the event.
“Without them, I wouldn't have all of this setup,” she said. “They did a lot for me today. They set up the arena, and they cleaned a lot, and they helped with a lot in their great support system.”
Nevaquaya said it was a great honor to be the Comanche Nation Princess. She was very grateful to represent the Comanche Nation. According to Nevaquaya, it was a very big position, but she was glad to have it.
“…One of the first things I did was do care packages for the military,” she said. “I come from a big military family, so I think it's important that the soldiers we have overseas or across the States, that they receive something because sometimes they don't receive anything. I thought it was important, coming from a military family, that we send care packages. And then another project that I did was host a tea party. I think that was one of my favorite ones because I got to bring together little girls in our community and let them experience a tea party. Because it's very, not rare, but it's something that we don't have often, so it's a great experience for them.”
There was also a luncheon held before the Comanche Nation Fair for the princesses. Nevaquaya said as a princess, there usually isn’t time to eat, or there are fears about regalia getting dirty.
“I thought it would be a good idea to have a luncheon because, you know, just to have a refreshment before we go out and dance,” she said.
Nevaquaya said the highlight of her reign was the Comanche Nation Fair.
“That's when all the Comanches come together,” she said. “You know, I get to visit with everyone, see people who I haven't got to see in a while. Yeah, that was probably one of my favorite times because it was big and we didn't have our Comanche Fair for like two years. So yeah, it was great.”
Nevaquaya said she was happy to represent the Comanche Nation.
“I'd just like to thank the Comanche Nation,” she said. “I'm glad I represented them and it was a big honor to be the Comanche Nation princess.”
Nevaquaya will not be running for Comanche Nation Princess; however, she will be studying Architecture at Oklahoma State University.
