Comanche Nation Celebrates Earth Day

On Friday, April 21, the Comanche Nation Office of Environmental Programs held an Earth Day event that included vendors, crafts, snacks and even a movie at Watchetaker Hall.

Program Assistant for Office of Environmental Programs Sarah Williams said it took much planning.

“We started back in November,” she said. “We first started out with creating the flyer and then we sent that out to the public, letting them know that the event was coming up. And then we started handing out flyers personally to the schools we wanted to have at our event.”

Williams said it’s important for kids to be at these types of events.

“The younger kids are, we're teaching them, so it's important to teach them to take care of the earth so that they're our next generation and they're going to be here after us,” she said. “So, we want to have a cleaner and better earth for them.”

Williams said these events help the community because everyone can learn to take care of it better by recycling and throwing away trash where it belongs.

“Recycling is the biggest one because we have so much cardboard and plastic used every day,” she said. “So, making sure those are taken care of and we can dispose of them in a proper way.”

Williams said she liked seeing the kids enjoy the decorations.

“Seeing everyone enjoy the event, like looking at the decorations that we worked so hard on, like having our work admired,” she said.

Williams said she thinks it’s essential to do outreaches to help guide people and help them with their questions.

“We offer our biggest program is solid waste and recycling,” she said. “We also offer water programs where it's water testing, just to see if you have E. coli in your water, along with other tests. We do provide indoor air quality and indoor pest management. So, with recycling, we actually used most of our recycled products to make the decorations in this Earth Day event, just to promote the reduce, reuse and recycle.”

She said just a week’s worth of recycling could save many emissions.
