Comanche Academy Charter School PTA Hosts Fun Run

At 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, the Comanche Academy Charter School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) put on a 5K/1 mile bubble fun run at the Fort Sill Indian School.

Comanche Academy Charter School PTA treasurer Yolonda Ramos said the event kicks off the Week of the Young Child.

“The Week of the Young Child, [is] celebrated nationally and so we feel like that it's important to recognize our children because of course our children are our future,” she said. “And it's important that we show our children love and nurturing and to show them that they are accepted no matter who they are.”

Ramos said the run gives the kids a chance to be active and for the PTA to show them a healthy lifestyle, which she said is important to her own family.

“I have children, I have grandchildren that go to the charter school,” Ramos said. “I feel like that, like I said, they're important. Our children are important and we just need to put everything into them because you know they're going to be running this world one day and we need to make sure that we're teaching them the right skills and the education.”

She said the bubble run went well, and it’s the second annual event.

“I feel like that there are so many ways that we can improve and so I just see this event becoming bigger and bigger every year,” Ramos said.

Chairman Mark Woommavovah said the event promotes wellness, especially for native children.

“By putting on these fun events for our kids it keeps them active,” he said. “Not only our kids but their parents and our elders so it's important that we keep this motivation going, this motivation of fitness and nutrition and it's open to the community. We want to reach out to our community, invite them in to let them know, ‘Hey this is a free event not only for our Comanche people but for our community.’”

He said the PTA adds value to the Comanche Academy.

“It's the parents of the students here, they have anywhere from fundraisers to events that involve our community and our kids; as well as our faculty and staff, and we have a great faculty and staff,” Woommavovah said.

He said he wants the kids to enjoy themselves.

“Not only have fun but to exercise while they're having fun and to see how important it is for their lives to have fun and to exercise,” Woommavovah said.

He said he was excited about the event and wanted to share his passions.

“There's two things that I have a passion for and that's my faith and a passion for fitness, health and well-being,” Woommavovah said. “And I want to share that passion not only with our Comanche nation but with our community.”

There was fresh fruit and hotdogs at the event.
