Apache Basketball Player Receives All-Tournament Team

Apache High School basketball player and freshman HolliJo Harvey won the All-Tournament Team at the Caddo County Basketball Tournament.

“That has been one of my goals since probably middle school when I used to go with the high school team to watch them play,” she said.

Harvey said the award had been her biggest accomplishment this year, but she does set smaller goals for herself.

“I have a whole set of goals I have for the rest of my career and just little goals that follow up to that,” she said. “I do plan on playing college basketball, but it’s going to…definitely take a lot.  I think I have the capability of doing it and I just hope that I can get to that point.”

Harvey said winning the award was a good feeling.

“It’s just a great feeling being congratulated and noticed,” she said. “Especially being a freshman. It was just a great feeling overall and I wouldn’t want to miss it.”

When Harvey first started playing, she didn’t think about it mentally.

“I think a huge part of my career is probably my mental health and just the way that I view things and the status that I have as a freshman and I guess how advanced for my age it’s just a lot of pressure because…people expect a lot from you,” she said.

Harvey said that when she first steps on the court, she gets nervous but finds her momentum as the game progresses.

“It’s like your nervousness and your doubts, everything just kind of washes away because you’re in the moment and you’re playing,” she said. “And I think that’s really what takes it way when you’re playing because you’re distracted and you block everything out. But also, it could be very frustrating. It a very frustrating feeling, but it’s a good feeling like when you make a basket like being congratulated hearing all that like that’s kind of what feeds off. Is just keeping that momentum. Then when you start missing shots, that’s when it gets frustrating. Is just whenever ‘well okay, I need to adjust or do something.’”

Harvey is half-native, and she tries to stay close to her culture.

“Back in elementary, I used to go to the Comanche Nation Centers where they would have the program for the kids after school,” she said. “I attend, I guess you could say, at least sports events and just stuff like that.”

Harvey is also the princess of the Native American Club.

“I got elected for homecoming,” she said. “I think that was something I was planning on when I…joined Native American Club and I guess…it’s a good feeling and I like representing that especially for my school and for Native American Club.”

Outside of school, she enjoys being in the gym and reading books. Harvey said she enjoys hopeless romantic books by Colleen Hoover.
