Comanche Athlete Plays Oklahoma All-State Football Game
On Friday, June 7, Kyree Coleman played in the 2024 Oklahoma Native All-State football game in El Reno at Memorial Stadium.
Coleman played wide receiver and cornerback on the West Team. His week began on Monday, June 3.
“Met the coaches; they talked about themselves, told us about how this program had started,” Coleman said. “They said this was the first one in Oklahoma for 18 years, so you know, I was pretty excited about that. And then every morning just been getting up, hanging out with the rest of the players here, getting to know them, getting to have fun, bonding together and practicing…put the work in still.”
He waited for the game all week.
“I feel honored because, you know, not everyone gets to do this,” Coleman said. “So, we were like the chosen few that were good enough to come out here, experience stuff, and first one in 18 years is exciting.”
He said it was also easy to get to know the other teammates.
“You know, it's getting to know them, getting to know their play style, getting to know them as people,” Coleman said. “I mean, it was tough at the beginning, but you know we're like all just out here. We're all Native Americans, so we bonded pretty easy. We all have like same experiences through life, so we just kind of gelled together. So, it wasn't super hard to get to know them.”
However, he also participated in the Indigenous All-Star Bowl in California.
“That was a fun experience, too,” Coleman said. “That one, I played both wide receiver and corner, too, and I got defensive MVP, so I'm trying to do the same thing out here.”
The final score was East Team 12 to West Team 7.
