Senior Spotlight: Zane Nelson

Zane Nelson is a senior at Lawton High School he’s number 6 on the Wolverines football team and plays receiver and defensive back. Nelson also competes in basketball, track and baseball.

Nelson would want to go to the University of Oklahoma but wouldn’t play sports there or become a firefighter. A station called him after a career fair. Nelson’s great-uncle is a firefighter who did really well in his career.

He is a descendant of the Atetewuthakewa and Comanche code talkers. Nelson is also the great-grandson of the late Francis Marie Redelk and the late Crutch Monoessy and Barbra Monoessy. He’s the grandson of the late Delita Nelson.

He’s in Stuco, Native American Club, Math Club, English club and esports, where he plays Rocket League.

“You…definitely be consistent with Rocket League to be good,” Nelson said.

Outside of school, he’ll be with friends. Nelson said whatever they do, he tags along with them.

He said football is a different mindset.

“It's the energy like it fills you up. It just makes you want to just win. Just win and move on,” Nelson said.

He said his most memorable moment was when the team played Mac earlier in the season because that’s when he got his pick.

Nelson said he’s not a mentor to anyone, but he tries to be a leader to everyone around him.

“If I had a mentor, it would probably be my basketball coach,” he said. “Coach Lehr really helps me a lot and really, really teaches me something every single day.”

Nelson said the team he plays with is his motivation.

“Probably just the people I'm playing with. You don't want to let them down,” he said. “Just win. Just win it in general.”
